LaQuan Smith
A lot of times we are told what we can’t do, and LaQuan Smith is an example of what we can do! The 31 year old Queens born male designer has made a splash in the luxury fashion industry and we are still seeing the ripple effect from his landing and it looks as if we will be, for quite some time.
In his, about me, section of his website he tells us he was taught and mentored by his grandmother. And we all know a thing or two about black grandmothers... they rear us with tenacity, show us tough love, and ensure we never forget that we should take NOTHING for granted and that nothing in life is ever handed to us.
Although LaQuan made his debut in 2011 and never looked back, it’s clear that it hasn’t been easy emerging and growing in the fashion industry. Since starting his brand at the age of 21 he has not let anything he has encountered stop him. We may not be aware but his designs have been worn by Beyoncé, Selena Gomez, Solange, Jennifer Lopez, and Megan Thee Stallion to name a few. LaQuan made it out on the other side of 2020 with no slowing down in sight. He is now teaming up with BMW for this upcoming fashion week.
“With a smoldering design aesthetic that makes prudes blush and a finesse for fabric that rivals couturiers, his talent is redefining modern luxury, ushering in a new and exciting breed of designers that NYFW is desperately lacking,” Elle magazine writes.
There aren’t a lot of designers that appeal to everyone, but LaQuan Smith I would say it one of them. His pieces embody sexiness and class at the same time... timeless if you will. LaQuan is an example that working hard gets you places you want to go, and that just because you make it there doesn’t mean you stop fighting because it takes all of us.
